Biomethane Connect Europe brought together institutional representatives, companies and experts from the energy sector in Madrid to reflect on the role of biomethane, the renewable gas that is already transforming the European energy model.
At a time when Europe needs to strengthen its security of supply and move towards decarbonisation, green gas is a key energy source, capable of providing energy autonomy, competitiveness and the use of local resources.
The main voices in the sector agree on a clear message:
biomethane is no longer an alternative for the future, but a reality that drives today’s energy transition.
An institutional vision: local and secure energy for Europe
Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director General for Energy at the European Commission, highlighted the role of biomethane in balancing the energy system:
“We have to balance competitiveness, security of supply, affordability and decarbonisation. We see a key role of biogas and biomethane in all these aspects”.
Local and sustainable, it can strengthen European energy independence by using existing infrastructures.
Nedgia’s vision: green gas as a driver for energy autonomy
Raúl Suárez, CEO of Nedgia, underlines the strategic role of biomethane:
“Biomethane is much more than a renewable gas: it is a strategic asset for Europe’s security of supply and energy autonomy. It is produced locally and generates a new circular economy”.
This drive allows for a more resilient energy model, which takes advantage of the territory’s resources and creates new economic opportunities.
A European opportunity: partnership and growth
This is where two key players in the European gas sector come in:
What is GD4S?
GD4S (Gas Distributors for Sustainability) is the association representing Europe’s main natural and renewable gas distributors, present in countries such as France, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Romania. Together, they operate the distribution networks that bring gas to millions of consumers and are active in rolling out biomethane and other renewable gases.
What is GRDF?
GRDF (Gaz Réseau Distribution France) is the main manager of the natural gas distribution system in France, responsible for operating, maintaining and developing the largest section of the distribution network in Europe, serving more than 11 million customers. It is a key player in rolling out biomethane in France.
From this perspective, Laurence Poirier-Dietz, President of GD4S and CEO of GRDF, stressed the importance of accelerating the development of green gas:
“Biomethane is not just a decarbonisation pathway: it brings energy sovereignty, security of supply and affordability for consumers, including industrial consumers.
Europe has the potential to scale biomethane by working together with sectors such as agriculture, waste management and distribution networks.
A shared drive towards the energy of the future
The Biomethane Connect Europe conference highlighted the need to move forward in a coordinated way to accelerate the roll out of biomethane.
As co-hosts of the event together with GD4S, at Nedgia we continue to promote spaces for dialogue that drive the energy transition and bring green gas closer to homes, industries and territories.
Biomethane is already a reality. And at Nedgia we are working to reach more and more people.
