Gas networks, key to a secure and sustainable energy transition

Business daily Cinco Días has published an opinion article by Raúl Suárez, CEO of Nedgia, in which he analyses the strategic role of gas distribution networks in the current context of energy transition. He highlights how these infrastructures enable us to move towards a more sustainable energy model without sacrificing security of supply, efficiency or competitiveness.

An infrastructure ready for the present and the future

In the article, Raúl Suárez stresses that gas networks are one of Spain’s great energy strengths. With more than 80,000 kilometres of grid and the capacity to transport large volumes of energy reliably and efficiently, today these infrastructures guarantee supply to millions of homes, businesses and industries.

Moreover, the digitalisation process —including the roll-out of smart meters and continuous improvement of monitoring systems— allows for increased efficiency, security and transparency in the daily operation of the grid.

Green gas: a real opportunity to make progress on decarbonisation

The platform also focuses on the potential of biomethane, a renewable gas produced from organic waste and fully compatible with existing infrastructure. Its use contributes to:

  • Boosting the circular economy.
  • Reducing emissions in sectors that are difficult to electrify.
  • Generating economic activity in rural areas.
  • Moving towards greater energy autonomy for the country.

Spain has sufficient resources to position itself as a European benchmark in the production of green gas, a renewable energy that enables it to move towards decarbonisation in a realistic and competitive manner.

A balanced energy transition

Raúl Suárez points out that the energy transition must guarantee environmental sustainability without losing sight of affordability for households and industries. Maintaining and evolving the distribution network is essential to integrate renewable gas and ensure an accessible and secure energy supply.

Regulatory stability for further progress

The article also stresses the importance of a stable regulatory framework and adequate remuneration to maintain and modernise this strategic infrastructure. Only in this way will it be possible to maximise the development of green gas and exploit its full potential in the national energy system.

At Nedgia, we continue to work to provide our customers with energy that is safe, efficient and aligned with the country’s climate challenges. Our distribution network is an essential lever to connect society to a cleaner energy and sustainable future.
