At a time when geopolitical instability and volatile energy markets are raising doubts among citizens, it is more important than ever to have reliable information and a long-term view. For this reason, our CEO, Raúl Suárez, recently took part in RNE’s Fin de Mes programme to analyse how the international context is affecting energy supply and what role the gas system plays in Spain.
A message of reassurance for Spanish households
During the interview, Raúl Suárez conveyed a clear and calm message:
Spain has a solid, diversified gas system that is ready to guarantee supply under any circumstances.
Thanks to a very capillary network and multiple gas access points, our country has a robust infrastructure that ensures continuity of service even in times of stress in international markets. Particularly valued by households, this security is based on a model that Spain has been consolidating for years.
Green gas: an opportunity to move towards autonomy and sustainability
One of the focal points of the discussion was the role of green gas, and biomethanein particular, as one of the major renewable energies of the future. Suarez stressed that:
- Spain consumes more energy in the form of gas than electricity.
- The potential for biomethane production in the country could reach up to 163 TWh per year, equivalent to about half of current gas consumption.
This represents a unique opportunity to strengthen energy autonomy, reduce external dependencies and advance decarbonisation objectives.
Biomethane also has an immediate advantage for consumers: it is 100% compatible with all existing boilers and installations.
It does not require any changes or additional investments by households, as it can flow through the distribution network in the same way as natural gas. The infrastructure is now ready for integration.
A driving force to revitalise the territory and the circular economy
Biomethane development not only provides clean, indigenous energy. It also boosts the local economy, especially in rural areas, by transforming:
- agricultural waste,
- livestock waste
- and urban waste
into a renewable energy source.
This process generates employment, boosts the circular economy and creates new opportunities in municipalities seeking sustainable alternatives for growth.
A network that guarantees supply and strengthens the Spanish energy system
The interview also highlighted the role of the gas distribution network, the real heart of the Spanish gas system, as it is the only one that is able to distribute gas:
- it connects more than 99% of customers,
- is capable of supplying energy equivalent to (or even greater than) that of the electricity system,
- and acts as a strategic complement in times of high energy demand.
This capability makes the network an essential building block in moving towards a more balanced, efficient and future-proof energy system.
At Nedgia, committed to the energy of tomorrow
At Nedgia we continue working to provide society with increasingly sustainable, competitive and safe energy.
We promote the development of green gas, support innovative solutions and are committed to infrastructures that allow households to enjoy comfort, efficiency and peace of mind.
The energy transition is already underway and green gas is one of the keys to successfully navigating it.
