Biomethane: a key opportunity for moving towards a more sustainable gas supply

Biomethane is establishing its position as one of the most important solutions for moving towards a more sustainable, secure, and competitive energy model. This was one of the main conclusions reached at the BiogasTech conference, held on 4 June in Barcelona, which was organised by Net Zero Tech to analyse the challenges and opportunities facing the sector in Spain.

Nedgia played an active role in the conference, represented by Ignacio Cabané, head of renewable gases grid connection activity. During the event, he highlighted the role that biomethane already plays as an energy source with a direct impact on consumers.

A renewable gas that utilises the existing network

Biomethane is a renewable gas that can be distributed through the existing natural gas infrastructure, enabling households and businesses to benefit from a more sustainable energy source without having to upgrade their systems.

As highlighted during the forum, this renewable gas contributes to four key objectives:

  • Strengthening energy security
  • Improving competitiveness
  • Promoting energy self-sufficiency
  • Making progress towards decarbonisation

Furthermore, the regulatory framework is evolving to accelerate its development, with new measures and regulations set to facilitate the growth of this energy source in the coming years.

A turning point in the development of biomethane

Experts agree that the coming years will be crucial for biomethane deployment in Spain. Interest in this renewable gas is growing, and there are already numerous projects under way across the country.

The benefits of this initiative are not just related to energy, but also to society and the economy:

  • It creates local jobs, particularly in rural areas
  • It promotes the circular economy by recovering organic waste
  • It contributes to the sustainable development of regions

The importance of maintaining a close and transparent relationship with the communities where these facilities are located was also emphasised.

Nedgia’s role in the energy transition

As a leading gas distribution company, Nedgia works to facilitate the integration of biomethane into the network, helping to ensure that more and more customers have access to renewable energy sources.

During his speech, Ignacio Cabané pointed out that the main challenge currently lies in speeding up the launch of projects and consolidating their development. The following aspects will be key in this regard:

  • Having a stable regulatory framework
  • Streamlining administrative processes
  • Fostering collaboration between businesses, public authorities, and regions

Moving towards an increasingly renewable gas supply

Biomethane is already growing rapidly and is an opportunity to shift gas consumption towards a more sustainable model, without losing the benefits of the current supply.

At Nedgia, we continue working to drive this transition forward and make renewable gas available to all our customers, thereby doing our bit to build a cleaner and more efficient energy future.
