The "Gas Verde, Sí" platform recently held a meeting with Joan Groizard, Secretary of State for Energy of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO), to analyse the role of biomethane or green gas as a key solution for moving towards a more sustainable energy system and strengthening security of supply in Spain.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the organisations that make up the platform, including Raúl Suárez, CEO of Nedgia, and Sonia Pomar, representing the manufacturing sector. During the meeting, the importance of renewable gas in advancing decarbonisation, reducing reliance on foreign energy supplies and building a more resilient energy model was highlighted.
The participants highlighted Spain’s great potential for biomethane development, thanks to the availability of resources and the possibility of using organic waste from different sectors. In addition to contributing to the energy transition, this boost would help generate economic activity and jobs, especially in rural areas.
The inclusion of biomethane consumption quotas in Royal Decree-Law 7/2026, a measure that helps generate stable demand signals and encourages investment in new projects, was also viewed positively.
In this context, "Gas Verde, Sí" will work with MITECO to define the necessary requirements to obtain the seal of excellence foreseen in the regulations. This instrument will streamline administrative procedures and facilitate the development of new biomethane-related initiatives.
The platform emphasises that moving towards a clear and stable regulatory framework is essential to consolidate a national biomethane market and accelerate its integration into the energy system, thereby helping to strengthen security of supply and advance sustainability and energy transition goals.
