On 1 and 2 October, our CEO Raúl Suárez, took part in another GD4S (Gas Distributors for Sustainability) meeting in Dublin, alongside representatives from some of Europe’s leading gas distribution companies.
Key challenges and opportunities that will shape the future of the European energy system were discussed during the meeting held at the Gas Networks Ireland premises. One of the key topics was the role of distribution networks in facilitating the integration of renewable gases, such as biomethane, and moving towards a more sustainable energy model.
In addition to working sessions, the agenda included a number of institutional and business meetings with representatives from the energy sector and public authorities, against a backdrop that is crucial for driving forward the energy transition in Europe.
An innovative solution to connect more biomethane production
The second day of the event took place in Mitchelstown, where the delegation was able to see Gas Networks Ireland’s new Central Grid Injection facility first hand. This is an innovative solution that enables biomethane producers located in areas where a direct connection is not feasible to be connected to the grid.
Initiatives of this kind are particularly significant because biomethane production is usually located close to the raw materials required for its generation, which does not always coincide with proximity to gas infrastructure.
The visit provided an opportunity to exchange views on how to make the most of existing networks to facilitate the integration of renewable gases and accelerate their development – a common challenge for European distributors.
“Sharing experiences and learning about solutions that are already being implemented in other countries enables us to continue moving forward together so that gas networks can fulfil their full potential in the European energy transition,” says Raúl Suárez.
Networks ready for green gas
Collaboration with other European distributors enables us to share knowledge, analyse new solutions and learn about flagship projects that can contribute to the growth of renewable gases.
At Nedgia, we are continuing to work to ensure that our networks are ready to transport ever-increasing volumes of green gas, providing a renewable, local energy source that is compatible with gas installations in homes, businesses and industries. An initiative that helps move towards a more sustainable energy system without having to abandon the existing infrastructure.
