Naturgy and CycleØ launch the first virtual gas pipeline in Spain to increase renewable gas production potential

  • This innovative solution will be capable of injecting 70 GWh of biomethane into the network produced at different points external to the infrastructure, facilitating the technical and economic viability of new developments.
  • It will be located in the province of Lleida and will initially transport renewable gas equivalent to the consumption of 14,000 homes.

Nedgia, gas distributor of the Naturgy group, and CycleØ have launched the first virtual gas pipe that will be capable of injecting renewable gas into the network from production points external to the infrastructure. This milestone is a major step forward for the development of biomethane, a carbon neutral gas obtained from waste treatment, in Spain, increasing the country’s production potential and promoting the technical and economic viability of new developments.

The new virtual biogas pipeline will inject 70 GWh of renewable gas into the Nedgia network each year from different CycleØ production plants located in the province of Lleida. This amount is equivalent to the consumption of over 14,000 homes.

Renewable gas will be obtained by processing of agri-food waste, compressing it for transfer as Bio-CNG to an injection point in the network, from which it will be distributed by a tube for consumption by industries and families as a substitute for natural gas. This solution will accelerate the energy transition efficiently and competitively, helping Spain meet its decarbonation goals.

“We are very proud to have developed and invested in the first gas injection point in Lleida, Spain, showing how a virtual gas pipeline can help break logistics barriers to extend biomethane production throughout the country,” said Laurence Molke, CEO of CycleØ.

“Nedgia’s commissioning of the first virtual biogas pipeline in Spain illustrates the commitment of the Naturgy group to decarbonisation and further increases the potential for domestic biomethane production, a crucial renewable gas to advance in the energy transition in a creative, fair and balanced way,” explained Nedgia CEO, Raúl Suárez.

About CycleØ

CycleØ is a pan-European biomethane platform. As an integrated producer of compressed and liquefied RNG, the company captures methane emissions from organic waste produced by the agri-food, industrial and municipal sectors and converts them into biomethane and e-methane. This green gas is used to decarbonise the transport and maritime sectors, as well as the gas network. The company currently has sites planned or in operation in Spain, Italy and Ireland, with the ambition to develop, build, own and operate at least 50 plants throughout Europe by 2028. Through its subsidiary FNX and Biogasclean, CycleØ uses its own market-leading technology to improve biogas, liquefaction, methanation and desulphurisation.
